State Testing Overview

For an overview of Maryland's required tests, view the Flowchart for the Maryland State Testing Program.
Maryland requires the administration of state adopted tests in reading and math annually in grades three through eight and once in high school. This testing is done either through PARCC (the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers or, for students with significant cognitive disabilities, through MSAA (Multi-state Alternative Assessment).
Science content mastery is tested in fifth grade, eighth grade, and once in high school.  In the spring of 2017,  MISA (Maryland's Integrated Science Assessment) will be given for the first time in grades 5 and 8.  In the spring of 2018, it will be given to high school students in 10th or 11th grade.
The ALT-MISA will be given to students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 5, 8, and 11.
English Language Learners in grades K-12 are tested for English Language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) proficiency through ACCESS for ELLs 2.0.  ELL students with significant cognitive disabilities will take the ALT ACCESS test.
