Virtual Inclement Weather Day Plan approved

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Kent County Board of Education have approved a pathway for Kent County Public Schools to repurpose inclement weather days as Virtual Inclement Weather Days. In order to ensure meaningful and equitable virtual instruction during inclement weather days, MSDE required the following components:

  • A minimum of four hours synchronous instruction for all students during each inclement weather days.
  • Required attendance for all students and teachers during virtual inclement weather days.
  • Opportunities for students to make up missed work during virtual inclement weather days.
  • The Virtual Inclement Weather Day Plan must be presented at a publicly accessible school board meeting.
  • The Virtual Inclement Weather Day Plan must be posted on the KCPS website.

KCPS will provide as much notice as possible to inform parents and the community that a Virtual Inclement Weather Day will occur in lieu of a snow or inclement weather day.

During virtual inclement weather days, teachers will deliver live instruction via our Learning Management System (LMS), Schoology. Within the Schoology LMS, teachers are able to schedule live sessions called Conferences. Schoology also offers a place for teachers to house essential materials that are essential for the day’s lesson. KCPS will post Schoology “Refresher” Videos to the district website to assist parents in navigating the Schoology platform.

Student and teacher attendance will be recorded and students are expected to be present for live, synchronous instruction in order to be counted as present for a day of instruction. If a student is absent for virtual instruction, their absence will be coded as an excused absence upon completion of the make-up work in accordance with the KCPS Make-Up Work policy.
